Temporary Marriages on the Rise in Iraq

Samira, a 32-year-old widow and mother of three, couldn't believe her ears when her late husband's friend proposed a temporary marriage with her. "He told me it was going to be for pleasure and he could end it any time he wanted," she explained. "He was offering me in exchange a good gold piece and some monthly income."

The period of a temporary marriage, known as Mut`ah, may range from hours to months or a year. Women get payments that vary from $100 to $1,000 per month, in addition to receiving a gold gift or its equivalent in money on the first day of marriage. Sunni scholars concur that such relations are prohibited and that a marriage should not be limited to a certain period of time. Shiites consider Mut`ah permissible.

At first Samira felt absolutely offended and told him off. But after struggling for months to find a job to feed her children, she telephoned him and accepted. What she did not know was that she was jumping from the frying pan to the fire.

Taking advantage of her situation, the man came back offering half of the monthly income he had initially offered. During the six months of marriage, she was forced to lock her children in the bathroom whenever he came. But the situation got even worse when she became pregnant. He forced her into abortion and broke the agreement, leaving her to suffer alone without any support, and to bear the stigma of sex-worker in her neighborhood.

Temporary marriages are on the rise in Iraq's mainly-Shiite southern provinces, especially in Karbala, Najaf, Muthana and Basra. Though there are no official numbers, local organizations estimate some 200 temporary marriages take place daily in the southern provinces.

Shias are not true Muslims. they are also very foolish. they are so stupid that they don't know that Sunnah Jammay is the true Islam. But many Maldivians support Shia leaders like Hassan Nasrullah, Ahmedinejad and Khameini. They will all rot in hell.

Anonymous 9:58: Who gave you the right to pronounce some Muslims as not Muslims?

Just because fundamentalists and extremists devise great ways to make halal what is haram (like prostituion in the name of "temporary marriages") does not give you a right to declare, from your own viewpoint, that Shias are not Muslims.

Rather, don't you think it will be more useful if you condemn fundamenalism and extremism as that is the real case here?

This is not within tenets of islam...
this is NOT allowed in Islam...
In islam marriage should have a time limit...it should be in the intention of forver...
Temporary marriages are a total contradiction to beliefs of islam...its a mode of degrading women...

..this is a legal way to have sex. As human we have to release the sexual energy somehow.

Indeed, God is all knowing..

well...some sunnis too practice this in other names... though rarely. actually some believe it was omar who banned this practice.there is only a few hadiths that support the claim that prophet mohamed forbade this (and some scholars prove these to be daeef i hear).anyway...one known fact is; it was legal in islam for a long time.its not a shiah invention. the difference of oppinion is whether it was latter banned.

for more info please contact your local mullah.and while you are at it ask about malakat aimaanukum which comes in the quran several times. how ignorant are most muslims about their own religion!

Looks like this Shia sect more modern. Can I become a shia? Or will undemocratic Maldives not allow even this.
Another thought. Can I do a quickie marriage just before relation with prostitute? Her fee can be the "run".
