Feeding Expatriates in Ramazan

In a move likely to be widely welcomed by the expat community in the Maldives, Trade Ministry has licensed certain designated restaurants in Male to remain open during the daytime hours of the fasting month in order to feed the large number of expat non-Muslims in the capital. Till now they have been facing considerable difficulty feeding themselves in Ramazan as restaurants catering to them were not allowed to remain open.

The ban was probably a vestige of the past in which the only people living in Male were local Maldivians, 100% of who were Muslims. This has changed now with 80,000 registered expat workers in the country, about half of who could be non-Muslims. Most of them have regular boarding arrangements with restaurants especially run for them.

Even during the past there had been initiatives to allow certain restaurants to cater to expats. But due to pressure from the religious lobby, such initiatives never materialized.

Before issuing permits the Trade Ministry has taken certain precautions to reassure the religious lobby that Maldivians will be excluded from the restaurants. For example, the restaurants are required to register their clients and check the identities of customers each time they are served food. Another interesting precaution is not to allow takeaways. This is baffling, as grocers and supermarkets do sell readymade food items during the day time.

Perhaps such illogical precautions are part of the price one must pay to keep everyone happy. All in all, Trade Minister Rasheed deserves congratulations for achieving something that could never be done in the past.

Most of these expats make home deliveries. So I dont understand why that should not be allowed. Its really stupid that anybody, muslim or non muslim can buy food from any shop any time and take home but a restaurant catering to non muslims isnt allowed that!

Yet another example of religion being forced down our throats.

Though compromised, this is a good step in the right direction. Congrats to the Minister.

I thought you will be writing about Indias extension of listening capabilities compromising our Independence.Perhaps feeding the expatriates is a surrogate for that. Not surprisingly it will be the other way round if this government continues as the power broker for us.So I just pity those Adduans who voted for MDP on the promise they will have a London in Gan.Now they will get a BMG.Down with the selfish, traitors of this Nation

The thing that irritates me here with the restuarants closing is that is like saying - we don't trust you people to actually do Ramadan, so we will close the restaurants and make it illegal so you HAVE to do it! Surely the whole point of Ramadan is OVERCOMING the temptations and fasting because you WANT to not because you are FORCED to?! Isn't it supposed to be about having the WILL POWER to do it and overcoming these 'temptations' around you! Of course its EASY to do it when everything is closed!!! Arrghhh!!! Makes my head spin!!!

And the changing of the whole life style. the operating hours of govt offices and private sector to make adjustments to work hours because they are fasting. everything is made easy because they are fasting and nothing gets done in this month. its like an extended holiday...
Again, to my eyes, its just another example of this holy month where you are supposed to show your worship to allah being made easier and easier to do. So what exactly are the sacrifices you are making here??

Ramazan Questions?

Do you think it is ethical for a head of a political party to be giving religious sermons?

Can a person dispense the commands of Allah without involving his personal and political bias?

If there are 'subtle political attacks' hidden in the sermon, would it not be a sin? What does Quran says on this?

If Anni give a religious sermons, should we believe every word he says?

Is there any law on this? Can elections commission step in?

We must use Ramazan as an instrument to catch illegal aliens.Police should now and again raid these eating houses to catch illegal aliens.Shortage of dollars has already contributed to some illegal expats leaving the country.A positive thing from dollar shortage. Every dark cloud has a silver lining.
