Homosexual Child Abuse

Maldives is an extremely conservative and pious society where calls for prayer promptly fill mosques, where recitations of Quran resonate through the air in the inter-prayer interval, and where politicians can win elections simply by raising the bogey of 'Islam under threat.' In such an atmosphere it is simply unthinkable that sodomy and pederasty are possible. Surely, those things only happen in the decadent west. It was therefore with utmost shock that Male citizens listened to the news that a man living in their very midst has been running a pedophilia racket involving long term homosexual relations with at least 35 boys.

On 11 January Hussein Fazeel, 38, of Veyruge, Villingili, was arrested on the charge bootlegging. While searching his premises the police discovered an external hard-disk containing pornographic images and a video depicting a number of young boys in various acts of gay sex.

An interesting feature of the discovery was how Fazeel had designed his room with games and entertainment to lure children. He obviously knew from experience that he could entice children by providing entertainment they lacked at home.

Since Fazeel happens to be a bootlegger, some people are sure to pounce on this fact and label this as alcohol related. In this instance of course it is alcohol related. But what about the numerous other cases we keep hearing about? Anecdotal information suggests that the vast majority of child abuse cases involve relatives and family friends. Most other cases involve elderly men who gain access to children in the guise of teaching certain subjects.

Homosexuality and child abuse are glaring examples of the discordance between our self image and reality. What is the remedy?

alas.. there is no remedy to it yet. ofcourse necessary precautions can be taken by parents but even then there would be loop holes if the pederast happens to be from the same family.
i see a gloomy future if the scope is going on in the same pattern.. the only thing people do is talking about it and implying they dont approve of it..

You are pathetic. You promote yourself as a liberal yet you state homosexuality and pedophilia in the same breath and try to give us the view that both are equal and both are a crime. Maybe your own narrow religion makes it haram but that religion is only for its followers and not for those who has a choice not to follow it.

I disagree with your view that maldives is a 'coservative and a pious' societyu. We are anything but pious and conservative. We are the Sodom of the modern world.

Mr. Waheed:

With all due respect, when you place the emphasis on "homosexuality" you are only serving to divert and blame only gays.

What about the countless number of adult Maldivian men who abuse little girls, even their daughters and step daughters? I don't think we should be trying to cover up this fact, in order to be fair to everyone.

Perhaps it could start with our health care professionals understanding the difference between homosexuality and child abuse? I think repression of homosexuals, which some of our psychologists and psychiatrists encourage, is a much better example of 'discordance between reality and self-image'.

That said, child abuse is wrong, and must be stopped, irrespective of sexuality. And this was not at all shocking, especially given the conservative/religious atmosphere of this country. It was just sad.

After Naseemso ,Islam teacher at Iskandhar School was caught abusing children, we are all wary of such teachers. There have been other cases of teachers abusing children.I am very suspicious of Islam teachers.

I agree with you on the first sentence, that its supposed to be like that, there are calls for prayers and all, but underneath that much is hidden and everything is hypocritical. DCJ, islam is not a narrow religion, hope you will understand it better someday soon, insha allah!

We know among ourselves there are Christian,athiests,etc...Islam gives you choice but it doesnt mean that in the name of democracy and human rights you can spread your wings by impinging on the others rights.
Coming to the topic of discussion we need tougher laws to be enforced to get rid this sosiety of this evil
And pls not Dr.Abdulla Waheed used to be a clinican once, hes spend more of his service in administrative side, clinical or surgical practice he did was for a very limited time so he does not represent Maldives healthcare profession.
Pls do not be misguided.
