Dream Merchants

Like a comet that makes it appearance at regular intervals and then disappears in a trail of dust, development projects keep appearing in the Maldives at 5 year periods. Technically speaking they range from the ludicrous to the bizarre and severely challenge the intelligence of the readers. The Moon Bay Marina project reported in Jazeera Daily is the latest in this series and hopefully the last.

Though the project hit the headlines only last week, its name 'Moon' Bay betrays that it was developed as an election ploy by former President Maumoon and his team of dream merchants. An animated video of the so-called project available in Metacafe would confirm this.

An intelligence defying feature of the project is its location in Vaadhoo Channel, which is inter-atoll sea and could be as deep as 1000 m just beyond the reef. A relatively more feasible idea included in the project is the famous bridge to Hulhumale.

Other famous 'dream projects' in the series include Villingili Resort, Ihavandhippolhu Transshipment Harbor and Gulhifalhu Global Business Park. Hulhumale also started as a dream project in 1993 and reappeared again in 1998. Surprisingly, in its third appearance in 2003 it defied the usual flow of events and became a reality, thus proving that some dreams do come true. So keep on dreaming.

I think the 10 year carbon neutral goal is an equal fantasy...Perhaps more so in many ways..

I am no fan of the former president during his last few terms.. but if according to your statement that this was developed as an election ploy, why was this not aired then..

And Hulhumale was never really in the works in 1993.. It started in 1997..Any real planning was not done until 1996.

Good question anonymous 4:22. why was it not aired by former president even though it praises him so much?

According to Shangrilla the Villigili dream will become reality soon. But it is more likely to become a nightmare like hehrathara.

I think its a bit too hasty of a judgment to have classified it as an election ploy by the previous government, due to the following facts:

The State Minister in charge of Invest Maldives of the current government has admitted that they were approached by the party interested to undertake the project. So why would a party approach the current government if the whole thing was in the first place just a fictional plot for the elections?

Second its confirmed by various sources that the party interested to undertake the project is Dubai World. I surely dont think that they are a company which plays along for a request to pull an election stunt.

It is a very hasty and unwise decision of the current govt to reject this project outright. With no look at its benefits or results. This project could have been something which the Maldives needs to reach the next level.

Developing 7 provinces with islands of average population around a 1000 means the majority of our population will be living on less that 2$ a day for the coming decades.

There are so many bogus treasure hunters in the world who write this type of proposals to hook gullible guys. so no point blaming maumoon for this. ok he may have also been a victim of this scam.

Now that former Prez Maumoon is old and regarded as an elderly person our customs dictate he be called Maumoon Bay. This is what Maumoon Bay is all about.

Transhipment port in Haa Alifu did not materelize because Kerefaa Naseem who was paid enormous commissions(bribes) kept demanding more and more. It was roumoured then that Naseem gave a percentage to Yamin his boss as well. That they were in it together extorting bribes.

Anon 1:48,
Moon Bay should have a grand Church of Maldives, where Maumoon will be the Archbishop.
