Summoning the Former President

When someone takes an apparently futile action it is often because the real objective lies elsewhere. When the famous Presidential Commission, established to probe alleged corruption and embezzlement of state funds and resources, issued a summons to former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, not even the Commission's most ardent fans –Abdulla Haseen included –would have really believed he would come running like Mary's little lamb.

There is a case pending in the courts challenging the legal powers of the Commission to summon and arrest people. Former minister Abdulla Yaameen has also refused to attend the Commission pending the disposal of the case.

Speaking to Miadhu Daily the former President's lawyer Abbas Shareef has confirmed a summons was issued late on Thursday. Abbas stated the Presidential Commission was unconstitutional and as such had no authority to summon people against their will.

Spokesperson for the Presidential Commission, Abdulla Haseen, has confirmed that the former President Gayoom had objected to accept the commissions summon. Haseen said the refusal meant legal action will be initiated.

Nov, Dec, Jan, Feb, Mar, Apr, May, Jun and now July 2009 - thats 9 months and still trying to get rid of Gayoom?

Half the year is gone and we are still in the past. When is MDP going to look forward.

For Gods sake, do it fast so that Maumoon would be history.

Please write an article about the powers of the president from the constitution and we will see that the commission is legalised by the constitution!!!

Why is it that the Kaamineege family is above the law in Maldives?

I would really like to know how one can become above the law. Are there any established criteria for this, and if so, what are they?

This is the democracy we wanted. The Maldivians wanted. What the MDP and Ittihad hypocrites wanted.Drug Lords can challenege the Police,The Judiciary and The Executive Powers so that they can go along destroying this Nation.Enough this is.Its high time MDP gangsters go about running this country.I tell the little fella sitting there to be careful.Otherwise this country will end up in flames. And you will never be forgiven.Your masters in THE DEVELOPED NATION CAN BULID A CHURCH ON OUR ASHES.

To Anon 12.52 am.
You are missing the point. the law must protect everyone -including Kaaamineege people. the problem is despite all the dramas played by MDP thugs, they are unable to prove anything legally against Gayoom or Yameen. So they are breaking the law to frame them using their kangaroo courts

MDP guys think we don't know the films they are producing with Reeko Moosa. When Moosa disrupts Majlis meeting, already MDP supporters are outside the Majlis with loud speakers. We are to beleive these are the population of Male. that's a laugh. about 50 or 60 of the usual MDP thugs you see everywhere. Go play your film somewhere else.

Now this Gayoom guy was the person who said no one is the above (ABOU)the law! Now it is about time he learned to practice what he preach! So instead of being hard headed egoist, I advice the former President to attend the Commission and provide whatever information he has on the corrupt activities that is purported to have taken place under his watch.

Like a nannugathi (Maldivian snake) that has swallowed a lizard, MDP government is paralyzed trying to swallow former president Maumoon. What a smart guy.

Please arrest Gayoom for a few minutes, Anni. Like you promised. Then only can u regret the arrest like you said." I will arrest a person or persons(for my sadistic pleasure)and then I will mourn the arrest."

GAYOOM MUST BE SUMMONED TO THE COMMISSION AND GRILLED. WHY SHOULD HE BE ABOVE THE LAW? WHO IS THIS MAN WHO HAD RIPPED-OFF THIS COUNTRY IN THE LAST THIRTY YEARS? IF HE IS RELUCTANT, THEN IT WILL GIVE ROOM FOR THE VIGILANTE'S TO FILL IN THE SPACE CREATED BY THE INEFFECTIVE POLICE. HE HAS TO ATTEND TO THE COMMISSION, THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO WAY HE CAN ESCAPE THIS.
