Police Search for Evidence in Nazim’s Office

The police raided opposition MP Ahmed Nazim's office Sunday, apparently in search of incriminating evidence in relation to allegations levied in the Auditor General's report on the former Atolls Ministry. Released on 8th May, the report suspects three companies (in which Nazim holds shares, though he is not mentioned by name) of using corrupt practices to win a contract worth about 2 million rufiyaa for supplying harbor lights.

The three companies under suspicion are Namira, Standard and Neyza, which the report believes belong to the same owners who used them as fronts to bypass regulations that require a minimum of three quotations for a bid to be valid. The report does not specifically say whether the three are legal companies duly registered with the Trade Ministry, though this appears to be the case when one considers indirect references to their shareholders.

Police raided Nazim's office at 1.20 am on the night of 24th May and seized a number of documents, a laptop computer and two hard drives. This was done under a search warrant issued by the Criminal Court.

The raid comes two weeks after the Audit Report and one week after President Mohamed Nasheed created a presidential commission to investigate misappropriation of state funds by members of the former government.

Nazim who was recently re-elected to the parliament from Dhiggaru constituency has been the subject of many unsavory rumors, perhaps partly because of his meteoric rise to fame and fortune. Notable among the rumors are alleged misuse of his position in STELCO to promote his personal trade in electrical goods and alleged corrupt practices relating to rural electrification projects. However, none of these allegations have ever been proved against him.

'' None of these allegations have been proved against him''
This sentence speaks volumes. As you have mentioned Nazim at a very young age became fabulously wealthy and the target of rumours and jealousy. To complicate matters for him he also happens to be a close to Yamin and they did exceptionally well in the elections to Majlis.
Now the MDP cannot digest it and Nasheed is playing Dr Jekyl and Mr Hyde now.In one speech he will ask his party men to be humble and accept the result of the election and just after a few hours he will show the real tyrant within him who is actually the person not able to digest the election results.
Now he is resorting to methods used by brutal regimes like the Nazis who handcuffed innocent people like women and children to satisfy their blood lust and many of the MDP thugs are no exception.
Perhaps Nasheed also has a similarity to Saddam Hussein when he cannot sit at peace with himself unless he is bringing about mayhem where ever he is.
Inorder to do all these now he has resortedto blantant violation of law to arrest opponents based on flimsy evidence and heresay and he will dearly pay for all this in the end.
Looking back on history we know that all dictators will ultimately meet a tragic end and the way things are going on now it appears that Nasheeds days are numbered.Till then he will wreck havoc in this country make life miserable for countless number of people.

"none of the allegations have been proved" well this investigation is done to get proof. already the audit reports gives substantial proof.pls let the government and police do their job. rule of law should prevail and no intimidtion can be used to escape from it.why would anyone even think of jealousy and hatred when the police are trying to establish rule of law. I think the police and auditor general ar doing a good job and thye should be hailed for this.

The whole gang should be caught and put in jail. they should never be allowed to come back to power and eat public money.

Those who say only the guilty will be afraid of investigations, as well as those who ask why anyone should think of jealousy and hatred when police are trying to ‘establish rule of law’ are either naïve or trying to fool the public. Arbitrary arrests and targeted investigations are standard tools of intimidation used by dictators.

HEP Mohamed Nasheed should have done all this earlier! Not now right after the Parliament elections! Should know how to play this game! All this is just getting too messy!

Bringing the guilty to book is important to drive home the lesson that no one is above the law. But breaking the law by the government is not the best way to establish rule of law. "Before You Embark on a Journey of Revenge, Dig Two Graves." --Confucius

When the Maldivian people voted for Wathan Edhey Coalition, did they implicitly sanction a vendetta against President Gayoom?

A company is a separate legal entity from its owners. Stelco is a separate legal entity from the Government who is its sole owner. Mathi Uthuru Utilities co is a separate legal entity from its sole owner , the Government. And Stelco is quite separate from the Mathi Uthuru Utilities Co. All these separate companies and its owner will be treated as separate legal entities. Same is true with Nazim's companies. If they bid for the same project , in the eyes of the law they are all separate legal entities. The Auditor General should be taught some basic laws.
